I know why the caged bird sings.

Weekdays revolved on a sameness wheel. They turned into themselves so steadily and inevitably that each seemed to be the original of yesterday's rough draft. Saturdays, however, always broke the mold and dared to be different.

-Excerpt from Maya Angelou's 'I know why the caged bird sings'.

I had been looking for this book ever since Oprah mentioned it on her show some five years back, the book was either out of stock or never stocked. And then I forgot about it until I saw it at a book fair few months back. I couldn't have chosen a more perfect time to read this. It is the perfect book for summer (more so if is raining in summer) and it coupled with the long laid back weekend reminded of everything I missed about summer holidays. It reminded me of a time when everyday felt like a Saturday.

Autobiographical work of Maya Angelou, it is about growing up black in small town in Arkansas. Beautifully written, a must read especially if you loved Harper Lee's To Kill a Mocking bird.

Dont you just adore Oprah's book club!?! Speaking of which, sad Oprah's no longer airing on Star World. Ellen's all right but Oprah was the real deal.

Knock knock.. May I come in please :D
Interesting choice of book..Always wanted to read the book since school.. Don't get me wrong,I was just disappointed when I read the book four & half seasons ago..I felt like something was missing.I also wonder the book is indicative of what she wanted us to feel..She certainly knows why it sings, don't she?

Her's the story of re-discovering who she is - of working her way through a multi-faceted racial identity crisis something nonexistent in our society rather I wish to carry from the book is the character " Mrs flowers " who shows us the strength of character and of mind that transcends the boundaries of racial divide & from whom the protagonist learn't poetry :)

But I agree on one of her penned prime liner in the book " See, you don't have to think about doing the right thing. If you're for the right thing, then you do it without thinking " Chapter 36

My best guess is that reading irrespective of genre's is like falling in love:) It works us over when we're not looking. It unlocks us. We forget ourselves & wake to find we're talking more freely, laughing louder.. We're quicker to cry & we blush brighter than we ever used to :):)

Come to think of it, Can't agree more on ur thoughts.. Wish every day was like a saturday.. Sighh..! Happiness is found in little things we do everyday & smile so easily .. Isn't it ??

We sometimes forget to notice the little details and they turn out to be the things that make us cherish the moment for the days to come :) My best guess is one ought to be thankful for the life he/she is living and also look closer at the things that surround them coz happiness doesn't depend upon who you are or what you have..it depends solely on what you think :)

rinchen, Oh yeah, I have liked quite a few of her recommendations. Then I lost track of her show....don't know if I can watch it now. I caught only one episode of Ellen...shes good doing voice overs and hosting oscars not so much as a TV host!

Lokesh, Look whos here!! Welcome to my humble abode on the net! To be frank I wrote the post even before I finished the book and I was a tad bit disappointed after I finished. The ending was abrubt and you do get the feeling somethings amiss. It is heavily biased, but the narrative and her choice of words kept me glued.

Btw do you blog? You should!

Yeah - watched Ellen briefly today morning. She was building up the audience as usual in the beginning before she does her 'dance'. Was very predictable.

I havent read this book yet - but after such interesting reviews, I sure will soon.
